Preparing Your Camper

Can you believe summer is here already?! Neither can we. Camp Toccoa is just around the corner, and we’re so excited to welcome your campers. Here’s how you, as a parent, can help them get ready for an unforgettable experience.

First off, remember that every child feels differently about heading to camp. Some can’t wait to dive into the adventure, while others might feel a little nervous—especially if it’s their first time away from home. Both reactions are completely normal. Talk to your child openly about what to expect, listen to their concerns, and reassure them that it’s okay to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

At Camp Toccoa, campers spend their days exploring nature, trying new activities, and building friendships face-to-face—no screens required. It’s a chance to step away from daily routines and grow more independent. It’s a unique environment and can feel very “new” to first time campers. While the experience may push campers out of their comfort zones, that’s exactly where confidence, resilience, and meaningful growth begin.

One of the best ways to ease nerves is to get prepared together. Go over the packing list with your child and involve them in the process. When they know what they’re bringing—and why—it can help build confidence. Be sure to include essentials like sturdy shoes, a reusable water bottle, rain gear, and bedding— (Psst! More about what to bring in a separate post!) Encourage your camper to bring activities to smooth the transition; A flashlight and a favorite book are great for winding down at night, or a board game to play with their cabin is a great addition. And make sure to label everything to ensure it makes it back home.

Finally, consider sending a letter or two ahead of time. A simple note during mail call can go a long way in helping campers feel supported. Try to focus on encouragement rather than how much you miss them—this helps them stay present and feel confident in their new environment.

Getting ready for overnight camp is a big step, and your support helps make it a positive one. We can’t wait to see your camper at Camp Toccoa—where they’ll gain new skills, make lasting friendships, and come home with stories they’ll be talking about all year long.
